What is a GST Invoice?

A GST invoice is a legal document issued by a registered seller to a buyer for the supply of goods or services. Under India's Goods and Services Tax regime, it is the primary record on which input tax credit is claimed, so getting the format right matters. A valid GST tax invoice must include the supplier's name, address and GSTIN, a unique sequential invoice number, the date of issue, the recipient's details, the HSN code (for goods) or SAC code (for services), the taxable value, the applicable GST rate, and the tax amount split into CGST, SGST or IGST.

For freelancers and solo businesses, a clean GST invoice is also a trust signal — it tells clients you run a professional, compliant operation. The generator above produces an invoice with every mandatory field in the standard Indian format, ready to download as a PDF and send to your client.

When do you need a GST invoice?

If you are registered under GST, you must issue a tax invoice for every taxable supply of goods or services. Registration is mandatory once your annual turnover crosses ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in some special-category states) for services, and ₹40 lakh for goods in most states. Many freelancers also register voluntarily because clients — especially companies — prefer working with GST-registered vendors so they can claim input tax credit.

A GST invoice should be raised at the time of supply: for goods, on or before delivery; for services, within 30 days of providing the service. Even if you are not yet registered, issuing a professional, well-structured invoice (a bill of supply) keeps your records clean and makes the transition to GST easier later. This free tool works for both cases — add your GSTIN if you have one, or leave it blank.

GST Rates in India (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%)

India uses a multi-slab GST structure. Most goods and services fall into one of four main rates — 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% — with a 0% (nil-rated) category for essentials. The 5% slab typically covers items of mass consumption, 12% and 18% cover standard goods and most professional services, and 28% applies to luxury and "sin" goods.

For freelancers and service providers, 18% is the most common rate — it applies to IT services, design, consulting, marketing and most professional work. When you create an invoice above, pick the GST rate that matches each line item; you can even mix rates across items on the same invoice. If you're unsure of the correct rate, check the official HSN/SAC rate schedule or consult your accountant — the wrong rate can cause compliance issues.

CGST vs SGST vs IGST — what's the difference?

GST is a destination-based tax, and how it is split depends on where the supplier and the customer are located. There are three components: CGST (Central GST), SGST (State GST) and IGST (Integrated GST).

When the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state (an intra-state supply), the total GST is split equally into CGST and SGST. For example, 18% GST becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. When the supplier and the place of supply are in different states (an inter-state supply), the entire tax is charged as a single IGST — so 18% GST is charged as 18% IGST. Our generator detects this automatically: just select your state and your client's state, and the correct split is applied to every line item, so you never have to do the math by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this GST invoice generator really free?

Yes. The Sahaayak free invoice generator is completely free, with no signup, no credit card, and no hidden charges. You can create and download as many GST invoices as you want. We make money from freelancers who later upgrade to save invoices, send them by email, and automate payment reminders — but the generator itself stays free forever.

Do I need to sign up or log in?

No. You can create and download a GST-compliant invoice without creating an account. Your data never leaves your browser — nothing is sent to or stored on our servers. If you want to save invoices across devices, email them to clients, or chase late payments automatically, you can optionally create a free Sahaayak account.

Is the invoice GST-compliant for India?

Yes. The generated invoice follows the Indian GST tax invoice format — it includes your GSTIN, the client's GSTIN, HSN/SAC codes, place of supply, and the correct CGST + SGST or IGST split based on whether the transaction is intra-state or inter-state. You can issue it to clients as a valid tax invoice.

How is CGST, SGST and IGST calculated?

It's automatic. If your state and your client's state are the same (intra-state supply), the GST is split equally into CGST and SGST. If the states are different (inter-state supply), the full GST is charged as IGST. Just pick both states and the tool does the rest.

Can I download the invoice as a PDF?

Yes. Click 'Download PDF' and you'll get a clean, professional, print-ready PDF invoice instantly. It works on both desktop and mobile. The file is named invoice-[your-invoice-number].pdf so it's easy to find later.

Will my data be saved or shared?

Your invoice data stays only in your own browser (local storage) so you can come back and refine it. We do not store it on any server, and we never share it. Clearing your browser data will remove it.
